3 Types of plate boundaries

Home | PLATE TECTONICS | Continental Drifting | 3 Types of plate boundaries | 3 Types of Rocks

Divergent: Places where plates are coming apart are called divergent boundaries. Most are formed on the ocean floor. They also form ocean ridges.

Magnetic Field- The Earth's magnetic field is thought to arise from the movement of liquid iron in the outer core as the planet rotates.

Sea Floor Spreading: Ocean crust is formed at the ocea ridges and destroyed at the deep sea trenches.

Transform- Sliding: a place where two horizontal plates slide past each other.

Earth Quakes: Are vibrations of the ground caused by movement of gigantic fractures in the earth's crust. Also could happen from volcanic eruption.

Waves:

Primary Waves- Squeeze and pull rocks in the same direction as which the waves are traveling.
Secondary Waves- Cause rocks to move at right angles in the same direction as the wave.

Richter Scale: Is based on the size of the largest seismic wave caused by the earthquake.

Convergent toward:

-Subduction(Volcano): Is formed when one oceanic plate becomes more dense. As a result of cooling, descends below another plate.

-Mountain Building(orogeny): Broad, linear regions of deformation known as orogenic belts. Most of these belts are related to plate boundaries. The greatest variety and the tallest belts are found at convergent boundaries.
